“Better the Devil you know!” was exactly what passed through the Auctioneer’s mind during one of our fortnightly Free valuation sessions when along came a fabulous Carlton Ware ‘Red Devil’ water jug with a come and buy me price of £300 - £400 it scorched away to furious bidding at £2,100 against a bank of Private Collectors who had booked telephone lines at Boldon Auction Galleries Summer Antique and Fine Art Sale held on 4th June.
Again this proved the point that conservative valuations and the correct internet marketing will bring together buyers who are hunting for that rare elusive piece and that is what Boldon Auction Galleries are consistently doing – bringing together buyer and seller.
The first section of the sale was Porcelain and Ceramics which included a rare Guinness for Strength man pulling a Horse and Cart which trotted away at £280, a Meissen teapot, circa 1740 sold at £300 and another Carlton Ware vase decorated with exotic birds found its way at £540 once again to an eager bank of Collectors.
The Collectables section was again popular amongst our buyers both at home and abroad with a Contemporary selection of Fender and Gretsch guitars coming onto the market ranging in price from £500 - £1000.
A bronze animalia bronze by Bonheur of a bull lying down realised £700, but the core interest lay with a collection of Siebe Gorman diving equipment and accessories, including an original diving knife selling at £290 and even a well used pair of lead soled boots walked off at £240.
The Jewellery trade was once again in buoyant mood with gold realising above scrap value and 22ct sovereigns selling for as high as £115. The highlights were a three stone diamond ring sparkling at £500, a 9ct gold cigarette case realising £800 and an 18ct gold Vesta case with enamel picture of a lady selling for £1,350.
Amongst the Furniture was a rosewood Steinway & Sons upright piano which made £1,500, a fine rosewood display cabinet £1,500 and a Mousey Thompson of Kilburn blanket box scampered away at £780.
