The artist who was singled out for praise by Queen Victoria for his marine paintings was born in Newcastle in 1823 and later moved to Sunderland where he became a lessee of Sunderland's Theatre Royal and Drury Lane Theatre. He was not as capable a theatre manager as a painter however and lost his money on various stage productions and died in poverty in Gateshead in 1896.
